Onze review toont dat empirisch onderzoek over de problematiek van integratie van fysica, chemie en biologie haast niet bestaat. In de afgelopen halve eeuw konden slechts twee studies geïdentificeerd worden die empirische evidentie hebben verzameld inzake het bevorderen van wetenschappelijke geletterdheid door integratie van fysica, biologie en chemie.
Literatuurlijst van de opgenomen studies
Er zijn een groter aantal Amerikaanse studies die handelen over de integratie van wetenschappen met wiskunde en technologie. Deze kunnen ons echter niet helpen bij het beantwoorden van onze onderzoeksvraag. Het aantal gevonden artikels is een relevant gegeven precies door de gevolgde systematische zoekstrategie. Naast ons eigen resultaat hebben verschillende bronnen het ontbreken van goede empirische studies bevestigd over de integratie van fysica, biologie en chemie.
Onze review identificeert twee grote studies gebaseerd op twee grote PISA-bevragingen. In de eerste studie gebaseerd op PISA 2003, waren 1867 leerlingen betrokken. In een tweede studie gebaseerd op PISA 2006 waren 4140 leerlingen betrokken.
De PISA bevragingen peilen immers precies naar de wetenschappelijke geletterdheid. De twee studies uit Zweden konden bepalen welke scholen een geïntegreerd, gemengd of traditioneel curriculum hebben voor wetenschappen en konden deze informatie linken aan de resultaten van de betrokken leerlingen in de PISA-tests. Daarnaast waren er een handvol kleine studies voorhanden.
